A circle, split exactly in half. One side white, one side black. Two fine horizontal lines crossing the divide — the only mark that suggests a boundary can be crossed.

It is one of the most minimal, most radical images Hilma af Klint ever made. And it was painted in 1920, decades before minimalism existed as a movement.

Buddhas Standpoint in the Earthly Life distils a profound philosophical idea into pure form: the coexistence of opposites, the balance of light and dark, the still point at the centre of existence. It asks nothing of you except to look — and in looking, to feel the quiet it contains.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who created some of the world's first abstract art in complete secrecy. A scientist as much as a mystic, she was deeply interested in Eastern philosophy, theosophy, and the invisible structures underlying reality. This painting is proof that her thinking was as rigorous as it was visionary.

It is also, practically speaking, one of the most versatile prints she made. The black and white palette works in almost any interior — from the starkly modern to the warmly Japandi.

This print works beautifully in:

  • A living room or bedroom as a centrepiece
  • A meditation or yoga space
  • A gallery wall alongside other spiritual or abstract prints
  • Any interior that leans Scandinavian, mid-century, or eclectic
