Deep cobalt blue, swirling like an ocean in motion. At the centre, a luminous yellow-green sphere fractured by teal geometric lines — two small circular symbols embedded within it like cells dividing, or eyes opening for the first time.

Above, a burst of yellow mimosa blossom erupts into the upper corner. Below, white curling forms drift through the blue like sea creatures or smoke.

Primordial Chaos No. 7 is one of the most viscerally alive paintings Hilma af Klint ever made. Part of her Group I series from 1915 — her very first major body of work — it depicts the universe at the moment before order, before form, before anything had been decided. It is creation itself, mid-breath.

The energy in this print is unlike anything else in the Hilma af Klint catalogue. Where works like Buddhas Standpoint offer stillness, Primordial Chaos offers movement, colour, and an almost overwhelming sense of becoming. It is the print that stops people in a room.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter and one of the true pioneers of abstract art, working in secrecy decades ahead of the artists who would receive that credit. The Primordial Chaos series was where it all began — her first attempt to paint the invisible forces she believed governed existence.

This print works beautifully in:

  • A living room or bedroom as a centrepiece
  • A meditation or yoga space
  • A gallery wall alongside other spiritual or abstract prints
  • Any interior that leans Scandinavian, mid-century, or eclectic
