Tree of Knowledge No. 5 is one of Hilma af Klint's most biologically alive works — a towering abstract form that reads simultaneously as a flowering plant, a human figure, and a cosmological map. The canopy splits into dark and light halves, radiating white lines like veins or starbursts. Below, rounded organic forms in grey, pink, and pale blue gather at the root like planets in slow orbit. Tucked into the composition, almost hidden, a small jewel-like inset of vivid colour — a detail that rewards close looking.

It is intricate without being busy. Symbolic without being opaque. And painted in 1913, when the word "abstract" had barely entered the art world's vocabulary.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter, botanist's daughter, and visionary thinker who spent decades making paintings she believed were transmissions from higher intelligences. The Tree of Knowledge series was among her most personal — an attempt to map the invisible structure of living things, of growth, of what it means to know.
