Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who spent her life making visionary, spiritually charged work in near-total secrecy. She stipulated that her paintings be hidden for at least 20 years after her death, believing the world wasn't ready. She was right — it wasn't until a landmark Guggenheim retrospective in 2018 that the art world fully grasped that she had pioneered abstract art before Kandinsky, before Mondrian, before all of them.
